The Wonderful World of MIDI

And then some

This site contains general information on MIDI, as well as an in depth look at the Roland LA series of synthesisers.

Spacemen?
You might well be wondering why, on a site devoted to MIDI and music technology, there are pictures of astronauts? Well why not! By the way, this has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I didn't have time to find any pictures of synthesisers!

THE SERIOUS STUFF
MIDI is a digital communications language, that enables synthesisers, samplers, keyboards etc to talk to each other. It also enables sequencers, both computer based and stand-alone to control the aforementioned instruments. The MIDI standard was established in 1983, by a group of electronic instrument makers, so that items from different manufacturers would work together. The standard has been gradually expanded over the years, both to control different functions on this equipment and also different types of gear can be accomodated, eg lighting rigs. These days there are some incredibly powerful bits of gear around, with unparalled levels of controllability, via MIDI of course.
